In My Traveller Universe...
If your are new to Traveller, please check "What is Traveller" for a basic out line of what is generally accepted as Canon by the average Traveller ref or player. Even couched in that many qualifiers, there are those who may quibble over details, as Traveller fans are a diverse lot. Below I will get into areas even more debatable, such as my take on pirates, robots, and aliens (oh my!).
Pirates
This is an area where many Traveller's get touchy. I will simply refer to the Classic edition's starship encounter chart. Pirate encounter's are indicated seven times. I will concede that the chart is probably meant to represent the Spinward Marches, and is thus affected by the proximity of the Vargr (known as career corsairs), the Zhodani Empire (a hostile power), The Sword Worlds (a rambunctious group), and the areas distance from either Sylea or Vland, with the astrographical obstruction of the Great Rift.
Robots
Droids, synthetic life-forms, cyborgs, AI controlled vehicles, I handwave them all in, just not all to the same region or without restrictions such as the Shudusham Concords. What is common in one region of space could be completely absent in another. Space is big. Really huge in fact.
Aliens
Traveller has an excellent justification for "funny foreheads and coloured blood" type aliens such as Star Trek has, but I prefer to not go there (at least too often). Humaniti in it's many forms is a majority, but not overwhelmingly so. Uplifted species such as the Dolphins, Chimpanzee, Orca, and the previously mentioned Vargr exist and are supplemented by a few of my own creations. Aslan, Hivers, K'Kree, and most other canonical races exist, and some have off-shoots or have Uplifted critters from their own biosphere.
Gravitics
Although I agree with a lot of Hypercleats' article "Gravitics", I allow for artifact technology left by the Ancients. This means the Imperium, certain Megacorps, and other extremely powerful entities have access to gravplates, inertial compensators, and black globe generators or other such far-fetched technologies.
Jump Space
The canonical "Jump-Drive" is only one application of this branch of science, and other forms of superluminal transportation exist, yet none are as efficient or as effective. No FTL communications exist, and thus the dynamic of "speed of information equals speed of travel" remains, with Jump being the defining limit. I consider Jump Drives to be much higher in tech level than the rules indicate, and exist as stated as a result of study of Ancient technology.
