Doesn’t the county pay for firefighters?
During the winter months, there are only seven paid firefighters in the entire mountain area, and although during the summer the state (CDF) adds approximately seventeen to that number. In an emergency, more trained people are needed to assist, and that is where the volunteers come in.

Why would anybody in their right mind want to do this?
The volunteers report a great deal of satisfaction in helping their neighbors. There is also the great sense of camaraderie, of being part of a team, and the opportunity to continually learn and apply new skills.

How will I know what to?
The county provides training on nights and weekends. There is a course on medical response, and another on fire operations.

How much will it cost me??
Zero. The county pays for all the training and equipment.

I don’t think I could stand to make life and death decisions?
The job is not nearly as dramatic as depicted on TV. We work together as a team to provide aid and comfort to those in need.

Isn’t it the job too dangerous and physical for most of us?
Everybody has something they can contribute. The volunteers are regular people just like you. They range from 18 years old to over 60.

What does a volunteer firefighter do?
Volunteers in Madera County do everything career firefighters do. They respond to fires, traffic accidents, and medical emergencies such as chest pain and difficulty breathing.

I can’t leave my job to go to an emergency, is that OK?
Volunteers respond when they are able. When committed at work or out of there area, we hope others will respond, and that is why it is important to have more firefighters.

I am not interested in the fires, but can I just do medical response?
Yes! The county has a new program that allows one to respond to medical calls only. In fact, medical make up about half of all calls for the fire department.

How much time will I have to commit?
There are two basic courses that account for a total of about 120 hours training in the first 12 to 18 months, then there is training two evenings a month thereafter. You need to make over half the regular trainings.

What are the requirements to be a volunteer firefighter?
One must be at least 18 years old and have a valid California driver’s license. The county will provide all required training and equipment.
