Chartered May 28, 1968, Soroptimist International of the Sierras is a dynamic group of professional women committed to making a difference in our community and in our world for women and youth. We have established a reputation of strong commitment to the community. We also make time for fun and fellowship with our members and their families.

We offer a variety of opportunities for service to our members. These service opportunities encompass a variety of areas, assuring projects of interest for everyone.

We address specific needs in our own community such as:

    Support of the Mountain Laurel House, a local shelter for victims of domestic abuse

    Scholarships, citizenship and academic awards for local schools

    Funding and administration of the "Baby Think It Over" teen pregnancy prevention program

    Emergency funds for individuals in need

    Breast cancer awareness and sponsorship of the local mammogram clinic

    Women's Opportunity Award, a cash grant enabling a woman to advance or continue her education

We also join with Soroptimist worldwide to improve the quality of life for women. Projects include:

Women in Action, which aids newly literate women worldwide in upgrading their lives through income generation, and improved health care and education

A Disaster Relief Fund, providing financial assistance to areas affected by natural disasters

The Soroptimist International AIDS Mediation project, targeting the commercial sex trade in Thailand and the resulting spread of AIDS to women

A global advocacy and funding for the eradication of land mines. Working with the International Committee of the Red Cross, Soroptimist International will work for four years to equip and maintain mobile hospitals for surgeries for land mine victims and further provide expertise, materials and training for local prosthesis centers.
