Drumlane

"Drumlane, a parish, in the barony of Lower Loughtee, county of Cavan, and province of Ulster, on the road from Clones to Ballyconnell; containing, with part of the post-town of Belturbet, 8457 inhabitants. A monastery was founded here in the sixth century, by Saint Edan, Bishop of Ferns, which became subject to the abbey of St. Mary at Kells. The cemetary was formerly the place of interrment for the chieftans of Breffni, and is still a favourite place of burial. Within its limits are the remains of an ancient round tower built of limestone and red clay."

    • As of 1995 there are 278 headstones - 147 are marble, the rest mainly limestone. The oldest headstone reads:
      • Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth McDermott, the beloved wife of James McDermott, who departed this life on November 7th 1844. Aged 64 years.
    • Seven family plots are enclosed by an iron railing

Newspapers

• The Armagh Guardian, January 7, 1845
  • Last week John Sheridan, a native of Glen, county Cavan, was found drowned in a gravel pit adjoining his residence.-- The unfortunate man was returning home from a dance in the neighbourhood, when he came by his death. Sheridan was an inoffensive person, and a teetotaller. An inquest was held on the body, and a verdict of "accidental death" returned.
