Become a Weather Spotter

The National Weather Service is always interested in gaining new sources of weather data. A relatively new program called the Citizens Weather Observation Program (CWOP) allows private citizens with home weather stations to share, via the internet, data from these stations with the NWS and others. The program is relatively simple, all one needs is a home weather station (many brands and types will work), a home computer with a dedicated internet connection (DSL or cable) and easily obtainable software and/or hardware to port the data into the computer. The NWS uses your weather data to aid in forecasting temperature and wind. More information and help in joining/setting up a CWOP weather station can be obtained by calling Jim Dudley or Steve Mendenhall at the NWS office in Hanford (559)584-3752 or by email: james.dudley@noaa.gov or steven.mendenhall@noaa.gov
