Early American Village

Heres an alternative example of what would be possible with a budget by census economy. We could plan, design and build a village in any time period. This would be novel way of saving resources by design.I thought a village in the early west of around 1790 - 1800 time would be a really interesting example of living an alternative lifestyle and how our budget would allow this.

I also thought an earlier lifestyle might appeal to those of us who would like to study the hunter gatherer lifestyle, only without having to hunt, since im a vegetarian.Either time period would be very interesting to study.More interesting than say,Poverty, drugs or alcohol.

So to begin with we would need a group of people who wanted to study this alternative, then find some land to build our village.Imagine for a moment what it might be like,no automobiles so we would need very little oil.We would already have our budget so we would find the land and lay out our village, design it so we could use horses and carriages or wagons for transportation and to move our goods and building materials around. Now for those of you familiar with the early colonial period there was iron and wood as building materials,a little later moving out west there were a few more meaningful inventions to make life easier. So we would decide what our town would look like and build it,and our homes around the town within riding distance. We could build a road up to but not into our area and a warehouse to bring food and supplies to and move the supplies into town on wagons, the wagons could have some modern features such as rubber tires to make them ride smoother,be easier to pull for the horses and so on,but remain as close to the early designs as possible to really get a good idea of what life would have been like then.Suppose we had twenty or thirty thousand people who wanted to live at least for awhile in this time period, then we would need to build a town of that size, might take a few years of building, each person kind of homesteading on his favorite piece of land and then deciding at the town meeting if everyone had a place that he would like to call home. So there would be lots of skills needed and to learn. The primary building material was wood, but we could use stone and dirt.Yosemite national park has a very nice example of an early american village in wawona as well as a beautiful old hotel.

We would of course need a hospital, and doctors and city services. We really could have a much better health care system and more health care providers because we would all be budgeted members. There are some really good books available on early american tools which we would need to learn how to make, and early american building techniques. Its a facinating time period to study and as budgeted members we would actually be putting accumulated resources back into the system doing just about anything that would be interesting to human kind. You may notice that with this system were not locked into production, consumerism, for profit type of economy. So its not overly necessary to find raw resources to constantly exploit to keep our economy going, just what we need for our village,we could export if we had something any one or more wanted to produce an excess of but it would really not be necessary because what we are doing is sending a profit back to the whole system by living like this.We do need to keep busy doing something but that something isnt always drudgery or working in a factory grinding out a product to sell cheaper than the other guys.We could really study this way of life to see if we could come up with a more sustainable model. We would certainly need less fossil fuels and other things.Although we would need our computers to keep track of what each person was doing and his/hers input to make it a valid study and to share with the rest of the nation and the world..To know where we were needed or to try to pick an activity that we would like to be involved in.The skill would be from fairly low tech to high tech. This life style would be fairly simple, still though we would be above poverty and we should be able to design a model where there would be less reasons for crime to be caused. If we did have television as an example which would require electricity, which would be decided by the town as a whole, who wanted electricity and where to use it.We could try to only show non violence to our selves and our children just to see if there could be less violence in our town.We could decide on other important inventions to use such as the telephone.

So we could make many of the things we need ourselves, clothes as an example or we could bring them in from the other communitys or that could be one of our cottage industrys like the shakers and quakers. We could have many other cottage industrys as well.

We could also leave our study area and go out into the world whenever we chose.
