About the Artist

Before I entered kindergarten, I loved to draw. It seemed natural that art would become my life’s work. I had a long career in commercial art with my own architectural illustration business. I painted the presentation pieces for the El Torito Restaurants, Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite, as well as numerous other restaurants, residential and resort developments and commercial buildings in Southern California.

Often people ask why I paint in so many different styles, subjects and media. The answer is simply that I enjoy many subjects and am constantly learning as I stretch the bounds of media with which I work.

I use photo research mostly for fine art. Still life arrangements are set up in my studio, supported by my photo research. An abstract thumbnail sketch is made for value study (dark to light contrast). The selected composition is drawn with thinned paint onto primed canvas. The photos and thumbnail abstracts are referenced from beginning to end. I use high viscosity acrylic tube paints and handle them as oils. At times I have used live models as well as photos for figure and animal work.

Angel paintings begin with an idea or theme. I then freehand sketch as my imagination suggests. When I’m satisfied with the results, the final drawing is traced on illustration board or W/C paper. The larger masses of color I then paint in watercolor. I refine with pen and ink, markers, colored pencil, whatever works. Usually there is a special child who inspires the painting, or a specific theme, such as Christmas or gardening

Currently I’m represented in 3 galleries near our home in the Sierra Nevada foothills, just south of Yosemite National Park; Timberline Gallery in Oakhurst, Madera County Arts Council Circle Gallery in Madera and Brumley Gallery in Bass Lake.

Commission inquiries (portraits of people, pets and homes) may be made on the website.
