SAFETY SPECIALIST / HUMAN RESOURCES GENERALIST

LOCATION: Oakhurst
DEADLINE: Open until filled
HOURS: Full-time work schedule; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. This position may be required to work overtime, including weekends and evenings as needed.
POSITIONS TO BE FILLED: One
PAY SCALE: $25.00 to $46.00 per hour, depending on experience.

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Safety Coordinator/Human Resources Generalist will provide assistance to the Human Resources department with duties ranging from supporting day-to-day human resource operations as well as providing safety coordination to ensure safe and efficient operations.  The goal of this position is to bolster HR administration and workplace safety programs and training according to legal standards and foster a strong safety culture within the organization.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Safety

  • Research and assess safety training needs and programs as determined by safety inspections, mandated safety training requirements, reviews of accident/injury reports, and needs assessments.
  • Develop, implement, and coordinate cost-effective safety training programs; review procedures and other training for safety content. Instruct management in techniques for conducting company safety programs to ensure accident and loss control.
  • Conduct training to ensure employees safely operate vehicles, tools, equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Investigate accidents, injuries, illnesses, and exposures to determine cause and make corrective recommendations based upon findings; develop measures to correct unsafe work practices for preventing recurrence.
  • Administer Workers’ Compensation notices and related documents. 
  • Provide training and documentation for Managers and Supervisors to report Workers’ Compensation incidents.
  • Submit Workers’ Compensation Claims, monitor, and update Workers’ Compensation cases.
  • Meet with Supervisors, injured workers, and the workers’ compensation insurance loss control agent to reduce lost work time and reduce workers’ compensation claims.
  • Interact with insurance claim adjusters on all claims for vehicle, injury, and property damage.
  • Administer the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) regulations and ensure compliance. Prepare and post the annual OSHA 300 log in each building.
  • Maintain an effective written Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP), including heat illness prevention, according to state law.
  • Maintain an effective written Workplace Violence Prevention Program.
  • Consult with all departments on the design and use of equipment, fire prevention methods, and safety programs.
  • Inspect/tour Company facilities to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, and recommend corrective or preventative measures where indicated.
  • Perform jobsite inspections for Construction, Central Office, Facilities Services, Building Maintenance, and Auto Shop Departments.
  • Keep managers and employees alerted as to the hazards of working with toxic fumes, dangerous chemicals, and any other hazardous substances.
  • Maintain and coordinate Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) information and make it available to employees.
  • Plan, coordinate, and lead Safety Committee meetings, safety drills, and events.
  • Coordinate Monthly Safety Topics, Weekly Tailgate Training, and specialty training as needed.
  • Update safety bulletin boards and posters as needed.
  • Provide instruction or arrange for Defensive Driving, Medic First Aid courses, Traffic Control, Bucket Truck Safety Training, and Forklift Safety Training.
  • Develop, prepare, and maintain safety-related records, reports, and other correspondence; collect, compile, and assess data related to accidents and trends.
  • Regular and predictable on-site attendance is an essential function of the job. 

Human Resources

  • Work closely with the HR Manager to ensure various HR activities and projects run smoothly and efficiently.
  • Assist the HR department with recruiting, including posting jobs, shortlisting candidates, scheduling job interviews, and onboarding.
  • Assist with benefit enrollment, including preparing documentation, communicating information verbally and in writing, and maintaining records management.
  • Support other HR programs, including leaves of absence and employee engagement.
  • Maintain and monitor Class A drivers’ Pull Notices and medical certificates.
  • Maintain and monitor all class C Pull Notices and process DMV charges as required.
  • Schedule required physicals for Class A licenses and process invoices.
  • Maintain knowledge of HR laws and safety regulations, and assist with routine HR inquiries from inside and outside of the Company courteously and expediently.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality. 

OTHER RELATED JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Ensure building security by assisting in implementing and maintaining security systems (for example, name badges) and surveillance equipment.
  • Participate in Safety and Disaster Preparedness Committees.
  • Provide ergonomic evaluations for employees on an as-needed basis.
  • Perform other duties as needed. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent from an accredited two-year college or technical school in safety management or related field. Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or Occupational Safety and/or Human Resources certification preferred.
  • Three years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Must have a valid Class C California driver’s license with a minimum of three years of driving experience.
    • Driving experience must have occurred after having passed a traffic laws and signs test.
    • If relocating to California from another state or country, must have, at a minimum, a valid driver’s license issued by the home state equivalent to a California Class C. The employee will be required to obtain a California driver’s license within ten days.
    • Must be insurable via the Company’s standard auto insurance policy procedures.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is desirable.
