FIBER NETWORK ENGINEER

HOURS: Regular office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Hours may vary.  After-hours and weekends may be required.

GENERAL SUMMARY

This position is responsible to research, plan, design, and coordinate the installation and/or rearrangement of all fiber projects to completion and maintain all fiber records for Outside Plant fiber, which includes fiber to the home, in addition to the Central Office fiber ring topology.  Using MS Visio, the Fiber Network Engineer will create and update documentation and drawings.  The role requires the application of sound economic, construction, and engineering principles, including Rural Utilities Service (RUS) standards, in the best interest of the Company and the customer.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Designs routes for fiber-based services including point-to-point, ring, and path-diverse routing.
  • Researches existing databases, files, and records for purposes of network design, fiber optimization, and relocation of fiber facilities.
  • Provides design schematics of fiber path and splicing work to be performed for fiber projects, relocation of existing fiber facilities, and restoration of existing traffic.
  • Ensures fiber optic database is current and accurate by inputting data of physical fiber assets and fiber enclosures into M4 mapping (Mapcom).
  • Establishes and maintains effective communications and professional working relationships with OSP Engineering, Facilities Services, and Central Office personnel.
  • Uses MS Office suite of tools including MS Visio to create and maintain records, drawings, and schematics.
  • Researches plant records and field conditions to determine present and future fiber needs.
  • Prepares work order documents with explicit detailed drawings and schematics.
  • Inspects completed projects and approves “as-built” for conformance to industry and Company standards. If needed, arranges for corrections with Construction.
  • Inspects projects assigned to outside contractors daily while the project is being constructed. Ensures work is completed to RUS standards.
  • Utilizes M4 mapping (Mapcom) and Global Positioning System (GPS) software for layout, design, and recordkeeping of Outside Plant facilities.
  • Regular and predictable on-site attendance is an essential function of the job.

OTHER RELATED JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Along with the Senior Right of Way Agent, research right-of-way to determine the best locations of all proposed utilities.
  • Along with Senior Right of Way Agent, initiate contact with public and private entities concerning physical plant locations or relocations. Secure all necessary documents and permits required to complete the project.
  • Proactively identify and participate in educational opportunities in accordance with Company procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience

  • Five years related experience with Outside Plant Facilities and/or Engineering is preferred.
  • Associate Degree from a two-year college or technical school preferred.
  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) is required.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Must have a valid Class C California driver’s license with a minimum of three years of driving experience.
    • Driving experience must have occurred after having passed a traffic laws and signs test.
    • If relocating to California from another state or country, must have, at a minimum, a valid driver’s license issued by the home state equivalent to a California Class C. The employee will be required to obtain a California driver’s license within ten days of hire.
